he answer is simply ‘NO’. Many writers erroneously think PDFs are the same as e-books. PDF documents are not real e-books. The major difference, among others, can be summed-up in one word ‘reflowability’. Reflowability is a unique feature of e-books which is not usually present in mere PDFs. Succinctly put, it is the possibility of an eBook to shape its content to fit almost any screen size. Though a PDF file might be legible on a computer screen, it cannot easily reshape or reflow its content to look better on smaller screens.
EPUB formats for e-book are known to be widely supported across all platforms. So it is important to ensure that your manuscript is in EPUB format at the point of uploading, because other formats such as PDFs might not be compatible with some online shops
eBooks have their own subtle advantages in terms of;
Budget and Cost: Publishing an e-book has been a safe haven for many authors whose hope of being an author has been dashed due to lack of fund or sponsors.
Another advantage is that instead of paying for every new print run, you only pay once to create an eBook.
Time: Creating and publishing an eBook is faster compared to producing printed version. To publish an e-book, you have an advantage to get it published within weeks rather than months.
Returns: The returns you get from publishing ebooks are unlimited
Apart from reflowability which is a major feature of real eBooks, there are other elements in your e-books that would make it not to look exactly like the printed version in terms of pagination, content page, etc. Though this may not affect the content, there are some exceptional cases. For example, if your manuscript is image-heavy or it has styling elements such as tables, graphs or lists, then it wouldn’t appear exactly like the printed version. This is because reflowable ebooks work best with a manuscript that is mostly text. Other elements that may be affected include; headers, footers, fancy fonts, font sizes, footnotes, endnotes, index, etc.
Children’s books are mostly known for heavy images. Hence they are categorized under fixed-layout eBooks (i.e. e-books that retain their print layout because they usually have much visual. Therefore, it is recommended that authors use a fixed layout for such books. Though this will affect reflowability and closely resemble the printed version, it is suitable for retaining the images and to ensure that they are not distorted.
